The Original Film
As Walt Disney’s second film, Pinocchio is considered by many historians to be a perfect film. From a purely technical standpoint that is. It’s the film by which all other animated movies are judged and it’s breakthroughs in effects animation are still used to this day.
Pinocchio is also the first animated film to win the academy award for both Best Score and Best Song. Said best song then went on to become the signature theme song for the whole company.
All songs were written by Leigh Harline with lyrics by Ned Washington.
- “When You Wish upon a Star” - Cliff Edwards
- “Little Wooden Head” - Christian Rub
- “Give A Little Whistle” - Cliff Edwards & Dickie Jones
- “Hi Diddle Dee Dee” (An Actor’s Life For Me) - Walter Catlett
- “I’ve Got No Strings” - Dickie Jones and Patricia Page
The rest of the movie features reprises of both Hi Diddle Dee Dee and When You Wish Upon a Star.
Deleted Songs
Six songs were written for the film but left unused. One song, “I’m A Happy Go Lucky Fellow” was later used in Fun and Fancy Free. So I will cover the song there. The instrumentals for the song “Turn On The Old Music Box” was still kept in the score of the film. The rest I had to gather from an old LP audio book, and a jazz cover made by a prominent band at the time.
- “Jiminy Cricket” - Jiminy Cricket
- “Honest John” - Chorus
- “Three Cheers For Anything” - Lampwick, Pinocchio, Alexander & Other Boys
- “Monstro The Whale” - Chorus
- “Turn On The Old Music Box” - Jiminy Cricket
- “As I Was Sayin’ to the Duchess” - Honest John
- “Rolling Along to Pleasure Island” - Chorus
Live Action Adaptation
While there are talks about getting a actual LA adaptation in the near future, so far the closest one Disney has produced is the movie musical Geppetto. With new songs by Stephen Schwartz.

Stage Adaptation
There’s also talks of a Pinocchio Broadway musical being in the works as well. However until then, there is a Broadway Jr. version of Geppetto called Disney’s My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale a.k.a Disney’s Geppetto & Son.
In addition to adding “When You Wish Upon a Star’, there are also two new songs in the stage show.
