Who Framed Roger Rabbit - 37

The Original Film
A lot of people don’t consider this movie to be a Disney film because of its collaboration with other production companies, the usage of copyrighted non/Disney characters, and its association with the Touchstone label. Which is indeed nothing but a label that Disney created in order to sell rated PG-13 and R films without tarnishing the Disney family friendly logo. All Touchstone pictures before the 2000s went through all of the regular Disney departments and are funded and owned by Disney. So yes, it counts, and it’s the film that truly ushered in the animation boom of the 90s.

The score for the film was written by Alan Silvestri with a smattering of old songs through out the film, ranging from 40s swing jazz, to classical music, to 1930s joke songs.
  1. “Hungarian Rhapsody (Dueling Pianos)” - Mel Blanc and Tony Anselmo ( Franz Liszt and arranged by Silvestri )
  2. “Why Don’t You Do Right?” - Amy Irving ( Joseph “Kansas Joe” McCoy )
  3. “The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down (Roger’s Song)” - Charles Fleischer ( Dave Franklin and Cliff Friend)
  4. “Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!” - Toon Chorus ( Jack Meskill, Charles O'Flynn, and Max Rich )
  5. “End Title (Who Framed Roger Rabbit)” - London Symphony Orchestra ( Alan Silvestri )
Deleted Songs
A planed sequel has been in the works for years now, but after being stuck in developmental hell for so long, combined with the original film’s copyright issues, the likelihood of it ever coming to light is very low. However there was at least one song written for it.
  1. “This Only Happens in the Movies” - Jessica Rabbit
Disney Released Covers and Remixes
  1. “Hungarian Rhapsody (Dueling Pianos)” - Magic Piano Disney at the Piano Vol 2
  2. “Why Don’t You Do Right” - Lil Green (the original)
  3. “The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down” - Shep Fields (the original)
  4. "Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!” - Billy Cotton (the original)

  2. “The World’s Greatest Criminal Mind” - Vincent Price (M&L: Ellen Fitzhugh/Larry Grossman/Henry Mancini)

The Black Cauldron - 34

The Original Film
Often considered the biggest animated flop to be produced by Disney, The Black Cauldron is a very decisive movie amongst fans. Based off of one of my personal favorite book series, The Prydain Chronicles, the movie is visually stunning but little else. Perhaps trying to smush two different books together from an on going series into a self-contained two hour movie might not have been the best idea. Add in a change in management mid film, creative disputes among the filmmakers, and an exodus of animators leaving the studio, and you have a mess of a film.

The Black Cauldron is one of the few animated Disney films to not feature any musical numbers nor non-diegetic songs. Not even in the end credits. The entire film’s score was composed by Elmer Bernstein, of Ghostbusters fame. It’s often considered some his best work.
  1. “Prologue” - Utah Symphony Orchestra
  2. “Gypsy Dance” - Utah Symphony Orchestra
  3. “The End Credits” - Utah Symphony Orchestra
Deleted Songs
Much of the films score was cut when Jeffrey Katzenberg came on broad and edited the movie down. A bootleg album called “Taran” was released with many of these missing tracks on it.
  1. Hen Wen’s Power (Alternate)
  2. The Burial Chamber (Alternate)
  3. The Horned King
  4. Witches (Alternate)
  5. “A Trade (Pt. I, Pt. II, Alternate)”
  6. The Army Of The Dead
