Sleeping Beauty - 21

The Original Film
So we’ve come to the last of the Silver Age films, Sleeping Beauty

As the album cover suggests, Sleeping Beauty is unique in that all of it’s music is adapted from a single pre-existing source. Both the score and the songs are arrangements of Tchaikovsky’s original ballet. Only unlike Fantasia, there are new lyrics written for the original instrumental pieces. The new lyrics were written by Sammy Fain , Jack Lawrence, and Tom Adair
  1. “Hail to the Princess Aurora” - Chorus
  2. “The Gifts of Bueaty and Song”/ “True Love Conquers All” - Chorus
  3. “I Wonder” - Mary Costa
  4. “Once Upon a Dream” - Mary Costa, Bill Shirley, and Chorus
  5. “Skumps (Drinking Song)” - Bill Thompson and Taylor Holmes
  6. “Sleeping Beauty” - Chorus
Deleted Songs
Three songs were deleted from the final film. Plus and alternate opening main title sequence.
  1. “Sleeping Beauty Overture” - replaced with “Once Upon A Dream” for the opening
  2. “It Happens I Have a Picture” - The Kings
  3. “Riddle, Diddle, One, Two, Three” - The Fairies
  4. “Evil - Evil” - The Goons
There is also one known song to have been deleted from a never released squeal, A Kingdom of Kindness.
  1. “When You Love Someone” - Erin Torpey
Sequels
A Kingdom of Kindness was originally meant to be a part of a series of mini-squeals staring the Disney princess line up, called Enchanted Tales. It was eventually replace with Key to the Kingdom, and then the series was canceled along with all other direct to video squeals. Little wonder too, because it is notoriously bad. A clear rush job from start to finish, and to add insult to injure, there is absolutely no attempt to make Sleeping Beauty sound like her original operatic self. It’s quite annoying over all.
  1. “Keys To The Kingdom” - Cassidy Ladden ( Amy Powers and Russ DeSalvo )
  2. “Keys To The Kingdom (reprise)”  - Cassidy Ladden ( Amy Powers and Russ DeSalvo )
Live Action Adaptation
Maleficent, alongside Alice in Wonderland, was one of the first live action adaptations to spark the trend. And if I may be a bit cynical for a moment, a lot of these’s films smack of copy-write shenanigans. Maleficent also smacks of riding on the coat tails of the popular stage show Wicked. But that’s just my humble opinion.
  1. “Maleficent Suite” - James Newton Howard
  2. “Once Upon a Dream” - Lana Del Rey
Stage Adaptations
While I highly recommend watching the ballet that inspired the movie, said ballet was around long before Walt Disney was even born. So therefore the only stage show that is officially associated with Disney is the Broadway Jr. version, Sleeping Beauty KIDS. Which features five new songs and arrangements.
  1. “Maleficent!”
  2. “A Curse on the Princess”
  3. “Merryweather’s Gift”
  4. “Briar Rose”
  5. “Find the Girl!”
  6. “A Little Magic Now”
  7. “A Curse on the Princess – Reprise”
  8. “Goon Conga”
  Disney Released Remixes and Covers
