The Original Film
So as we leave the Wartime era behind and inter into the Silver Age, we come upon what is my personal favorite film of all time, Cinderella.
I could wax poetic about this movie for pages and pages at a time. But since we have a long list of songs to cover, I won’t and will instead jump right into the nitty gritty.
All the songs in the film were written by Mack David, Jerry Livingston, and Al Hoffman. The trio were a group of popular song writers at the time with little experience in musicals. However, Disney wanted the soundtrack to reflect the then changing landscape of the pop charts and showcase doo-wop style music. Hence the focus on harmonizing in the nightingale song and the nonsense words in the Fairy Godmother’s lyrics.
- “Cinderella” - The Jud Conlon Chorus and Marni Nixon
- “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” - Ilene Woods
- “Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale” - Rhoda Williams and Ilene Woods
- “The Work Song” - James MacDonald and Chorus
- “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" - Verna Felton and Chorus
- “So This Is Love” - Ilene Woods and Mike Douglas
Deleted Songs
A whole other soundtrack was deleted from the film. Originally the music for the movie was going to be composed by Charles Wolcott and Larry Morey but when Disney decided he wanted to take the musical score in another direction they were cut from the film and replaced with the score we have to day.
- “Sing a Little, Dream A Little” - Cinderella
- “I’m In The Middle Of A Muddle” - Cinderella
- “The Mouse Song” - The Mice
- “The Dress My Mother Wore” - Cinderella
- “The Cinderella Work Song” - Cinderella
- “Dancing On A Cloud” - Cinderella and The Prince
- “I Lost My Heart At the Ball” - Cinderella
- “The Face That I See In the Night” - The Prince
Squeals
Two direct to video movies based off the original were made. The firstCinderella II: Dreams Come True, is a collection of shorts that were made for a canceled tv show. All of the music is performed by an off screen singer rather than the characters themselves and is in much more modern pop style.
- “Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)” - Brooke Allison and Gina La Piana ( Mack David, Al Hoffman, Michael Bradford and Jerry Livingston)
- “Follow Your Heart” - Brooke Allison ( Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner)
- “The World Is Looking Up To You” - Brooke Allison ( Randy Rogel )
- “It’s What’s Inside That Counts” - Brooke Allison ( Randy Rogel )
The second, Cinderella III: A Twist in Time, is actually inspired by a stage production and is a reimagining of the original movie’s ending. While based off an off Broadway musical, this film contains all new musical numbers written just for the film.
- “Perfectly Perfect” - Tami Tappan Damiano, Lesli Margherita, Russi Taylor, Rob Paulsen, andCorey Burton ( Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner)
- “More Than A Dream” - Tami Tappan Damiano ( Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner )
- “Anastasia’s Theme” - Lesli Margherita ( Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner)
- “At the Ball” - Rob Paulsen and Corey Burton ( Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner )
- “I Still Believe” - Hayden Panettiere ( Matthew Gerrard and Bridget Benenate )
Live Action Adaptions
The 2015 adaptation features mainly covers of previous Disney songs, including one from So Dear To My Heart. With one new song for end credits.
- “Lavender’s Blue Dilly Dilly” - Lilly James
- “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo(Magic Song)” - Helena Bonham Carter
- “ A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” - Lily James
- “Strong” - Sonna Rele ( Patrick Doyle)
Stage Adaptions
While Walt Disney Television did produce a made for tv adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella back 1997; the popular Broadway show has very little to do with the company. Instead Disney has created at a Broadway Jr. version of their popular cartoon titled Cinderella KIDS. Featuring all the songs from the original, only one can be called “new”. The introduction is set to the tune of “The Work Song” but with whole new lyrics.
In addition to this Disney also created a stage musical fir their cruise ship based off the tale. Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story retells the ending of Cinderella with a different spin. With six new songs and inspiring the animated squeal to boot.
- “All Because Of A Shoe” - Cast
- “It’s Never Too Late” - Stepmother, Stepsisters, and Franco
- “In A Moment” - Cast
- “Inside Out” - Fairy Godmother and Mice
- “Chasing A Dream” - The Prince, The Grand Duke, and the Townsfolk
- “Believe In Me” - Cinderella
Music Videos
I’m not entirely sure the story behind this one but, here is a song with a Cinderella framing device. Possibly as a promotion for one of the DVD releases.
